ABOUT
Peter deVries was born in the Philippines to American missionaries and, after sporadic lessons, returned with his parents to the United States at the age of 16 and began consistent violin studies. After two years of remarkable progress he won a full scholarship to the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music where he completed Bachelors and Masters degrees in Violin Performance with Distinction under James Buswell and Josef Gingold. He has since enjoyed an extensive career as a soloist, recitalist, conductor and teacher in much of the United States and Europe and parts of South America. deVries’ chamber music groups have appeared in the Carnegie Recital Hall with critical acclaim from the New York Times and won the Coleman Award at the prestigious Coleman Chamber Music Auditions in Pasadena, California.
deVries performs on a 1706 G. B. Rogerius violin with an 1879 Francois Voirin exhibition bow.
CONCERTMASTER
Mr. deVries has served as concertmaster of some of today’s finest orchestras in both the United States and Europe. He was Principal Concertmaster and Soloist of the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra for more than 10 years and filled the role of Soloist/Conductor/Concertmaster with chamber orchestras in much of Iberia. Before moving to Europe, he was Concertmaster of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Associate Concertmaster of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and Concertmaster of the Knoxville Symphony Pops, and first violin of the Grand Teton Music Festival. He currently serves as Concertmaster of Opera Carolina, one of the premiere opera companies in the Unites States, as well as the Opera Orchestra of Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC, and recently appeared for a second time as concertmaster with Andrea Bocelli.
deVries has appeared as soloist in many of today’s most loved violin concertos including those of Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Bruch, Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Mozart, Bach and Vivaldi. He has also enjoyed presenting concerti that are not necessarily mainstream, but perhaps deserve to be, such as the Phillip Glass Concerto; Malcolm McDonald’s “A Spell for Green Corn”; and the concerto by the renowned Portuguese violinist Luis de Freitas Branco.
deVries and director Rick Fitts won an award in the Best Shorts category of the 2021 Raleigh Film & Art Festival.

Later, as director and first violinist of the Knoxville Symphony Chamber Players, he programmed and performed in one of the early performances of Roots II by the great jazz cellist David Baker with the composer in attendance.
Mr. deVries continues to maintain a full chamber music career, appearing frequently with international festivals such as KesaVirratSoi in Finland and the Gerhart Chamber Music Festival in Alabama and with some of North Carolina’s finest artists.

Mr. deVries has taught at significant schools of music in both the United States and Europe including Indiana University in both Bloomington and Ft. Wayne, IN, and Instituto Jean Piaget in Portugal. He has been invited to give violin master classes at such prestigious institutions as Carnegie Mellon University and has received numerous awards including the Unites States Presidential Scholars Teacher Award.
deVries recently joined the faculty of Queens University in Charlotte as Artist in Residence in Violin and, in addition, serves as Adjunct Professor of violin at Central Piedmont Community College.
“Peter’s guidance has helped change the way I view the violin. He is so methodical, yet incredibly musical. He combed through my playing and helped fill in little gaps with knowledge and new ways to think of the fingerboard.”
